The Melrose Human Rights Commission's Education and Community Outreach Committee is responsible for undertaking programs that are designed to promote the ideas of respect and diversity within the community. Through the efforts of Commission members and volunteers, the committee sponsors or participates in a series of regularly scheduled annual events and works to develop new educational programs and events. The Education and Community Outreach Committee works with the Melrose Clergy Association and the League of Women Voters to sponsor and organize the annual Martin Luther King Day Potluck Dinner. Initiated in 1993, this event has been a well-attended gathering of Melrose citizens who join to commemorate the legacy of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and to reaffirm their dedication to the cause of civil rights. The event is highlighted by story telling and singing, as well as lots of good food. With regard to other regularly scheduled events, the committee participates in the Early Childhood Learning Fair at the Lincoln School in March, has a booth at the annual Victorian Fair in September, and sponsors the Candlelight March during the Home for the Holidays celebration in December. The committee has also organized or participated in a range of one-time or infrequently scheduled activities and has made a special effort to work with the schools on the development of curricula to promote the ideas of respect and multiculturalism. The Education and Community Outreach Committee is constantly in search of new ideas to fulfill its outreach mission and welcomes the participation of volunteers from the community. If you wish to contribute, contact George Stubbs at 665-7773.
